Introducing The Fourth Trimester Collective: A Shared Purpose, a New Beginning
The Fourth Trimester Collective began with a group of like-minded doulas and a shared belief: maternal mental health deserves care, attention and meaningful support throughout the perinatal experience.

Coming from the charity sector, we shared a commitment to community and to work rooted in care. We wanted to bring that commitment together with our experience as doulas to build a non-profit dedicated to supporting maternal mental health through pregnancy, birth and the transition into parenthood.
That shared purpose became The Fourth Trimester Collective.
Why the fourth trimester?
The fourth trimester refers to the first months after birth—a time of recovery, adjustment and getting to know a new baby. It is also a time when the person who has given birth needs care of their own.
So much attention naturally turns towards the baby. Yet alongside this new life is someone navigating change: in their body, their relationships, their identity and their everyday world. Joy and love may sit alongside uncertainty, exhaustion, grief or loneliness. There should be room to speak openly about all of it.
Our name reflects our commitment to holding space for this transition. Our purpose reaches across the perinatal experience, recognizing that emotional wellbeing matters during pregnancy as well as after birth.
Bringing different kinds of care together
As doulas, we value the steady presence of someone who listens, offers practical support and meets people where they are. We also recognize that no single approach can meet every person’s needs.
Our collective brings together practitioners from different disciplines, including psychotherapy and acupuncture, alongside doula support. We are connected by a shared commitment to compassionate, person-centered care, with each practitioner contributing their own perspective and expertise.
For us, being a collective means making space for collaboration. It means listening to one another, respecting the distinct roles of different practitioners and keeping the needs of the person seeking support at the center.
A non-profit with community at its heart
Our roots in the charity sector helped shape the organisation we wanted to build: a non-profit with a clear social purpose, grounded in the understanding that maternal wellbeing matters to families and communities.
We want to help create a culture where asking for support feels possible, where difficult feelings can be voiced without judgement, and where people feel heard as individuals. The perinatal experience is deeply personal. Care should make room for different circumstances, identities, family structures and ways of becoming a parent.
We are at the beginning of this story, and we look forward to sharing it with you. Through this blog, we will introduce the people behind the collective, explore maternal mental health and offer perspectives from the different disciplines that make up our community.
Above all, The Fourth Trimester Collective grew from a simple belief: the person doing the caring deserves care too.
We’re glad you’re here.
